Tim’s Story

Tim’s Story

Tim is part of the Springwater church community. He is a gifted musician and likes to use this gift busking and sharing his story on the streets of England. Tim is also a professional entertainer who has played at private events and in various other venues. One of his clients was Dame Judy Dench. The following story is from one of his recent busking gigs.

I was busking in Christchurch when a guy came over to me at dusk, who was severely disabled.

I asked him what he would like to hear me play for him, he told me, so I obliged. I could see the appreciation and joy in him and I told him it was an honour and privilege to be able to play it for him, and felt humbled. In further conversation, I must have said something which prompted him to ask me if I was religious. I told him that he might call me religious, but I would deny that I was a religious person, but rather my claim would be that I am a disciple of Jesus.

His father is his full-time carer, and he came and joined us. It turns out that these two people were, until quite recently, very sceptical about Jesus. Things had changed as they had heard that their daughter/sister had encountered Jesus and been saved and born again, and her life is completely transformed. I told them that I know she will be praying for them. I explained that when God & the Holy Spirit is working in someone’s life, He often brings other witnesses who will also testify to the truth of Jesus and His life-transforming power. It says in the Bible “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.” Then two guys told me that she had already said to them that she was praying for them, so I suggested that I might be the second. They told me that I was actually the third, as they had already met another girl and who also had recently become a Christian and had said to them that she sensed God was going to give them a sign.

Cross on ceiling

The next day, from nowhere, as the disabled son looked above from his wheelchair in their lounge, a cross appeared on the ceiling right over him in exact line with his sight. Being sceptical, they searched the curtains and everything to see what might have caused it but could not find anything and eventually admitted that they felt that it was the sign that the girl told them about. The dad managed to take a picture of it before it disappeared.

I was able to also gently encourage them that this was what that girl had referred to. It’s was a sign that God was getting their attention but that the sign won’t save them. I was able to share with them in detail that being born again spiritually, admitting that they have fallen short of Gods way, repenting for those things that have been done that were not following God’s way, saying sorry and believing that Jesus died on the cross for them would set them free.

The dad texted me later, about the sign, so I replied: The fact that the sign was prophesied the day before, you know God is in this.

I encouraged them to not let this opportunity pass them by. I know people who have had similar experiences, but not accepted the love of Jesus. In fact, in the bible I gave them (a Gideon NT), there’s a true story about a guy called King Agrippa, he had the opportunity to get his life right with God. Still, he ended up by saying to the preacher “you almost persuaded me to become a follower of Jesus Christ”.

An old hymn was written about this, the last line still brings tears to my eyes:

“Almost persuaded” now to believe;
“Almost persuaded” Christ to receive;
Seems now some soul to say,
Go, Spirit, go Thy way,
Some more convenient day
On Thee, I’ll call.

“Almost persuaded”, come, come today;
“Almost persuaded”, turn not away;
Jesus invites you here,
Angels are lingering near
Prayers rise from hearts so dear; (your own sister)
O wanderer, come!

Almost persuaded, harvest is past!
Almost persuaded, doom comes at last!
Almost cannot avail;
Almost is but to fail!
Sad, sad, that bitter wail—
Almost, but lost!

May we not be almost persuaded but fully persuaded.
